Composting: Following the cycle to grow with purpose
Cafès Illes Balears
AT CAFÈS ILLES BALEARS, EVERY ACTION WE TAKE IS AIMED AT RESPECTING AND ENRICHING THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND US. COMPOSTING IS ONE OF THE METHODS WE USE TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF OUR ORGANIC CROPS.

COMPOSTING AT THE CAFÈS ILLES BALEARS FARM
What is composting and why do we do it?
Composting is a natural process of breaking down organic matter—such as plant waste, peels, and other biodegradable materials (like our Illes Coffee Lab cups)—into a nutrient-rich fertilizer. This organic matter breaks down actively, with microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) decomposing the waste in the presence of oxygen. During this stage, biological activity generates a high amount of heat, reaching temperatures between 45°C and 65°C. That’s why at Cafès Illes Balears, instead of discarding these materials, we recover them and give them a second life: we turn them into fertilizer for our own crops.
Benefits of composting in our production system
More fertile soil:
Compost improves soil structure and increases its ability to retain water and nutrients.
Less waste
We reduce the amount of waste we generate, actively contributing to the circular economy.
Closed loop:
We use our own waste to feed new plants, making each stage of production more sustainable.
Lower carbon footprint
We strive to reduce associated emissions with our eco-friendly methods.
